Title: Formative Assessment in Teacher Education and Teacher Professional Development
Abstract: The function of formative assessment is to promote learning. Formative assessment provides feedback that supports the learners to close the gap between where they are and what they are aiming for. Several instruments of assessment for learning are now available in teacher education and the professional development of teachers. Tools such as portfolio, peer assessment, and self assessment are among the most prominent. These instruments, however, call for a perspective on assessment aimed at understanding teacher learning. This article offers some guidelines and principles to support formative assessment in the professional development of teachers.
