In humans, graphic representations of mesonephric tubules have only been reported for the first 12 weeks of development. Using similar methods, the development of the Wolffian body (mesonephros) in mice has been described. The chapter presents 75 computer-generated models of murine and human mesonephroi; each was constructed from serially sectioned samples. The borders of mesonephric organs were determined manually and then three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction software was used to combine and segment the individual organs. The results are models of various stages of development that allow unique insights into the anatomy of this evanescent and poorly characterized organ. The presented models contribute the first steps in building a 3D atlas of the mesonephros. In addition to uncovering details of mesonephric anatomy, such models may serve as the scaffold upon which gene expression patterns can be projected and analyzed.Read More
