Title: Chapter Six. The Progress Of Poverty Alleviation In The Rural West
Abstract: At the beginning of the reform and opening, the proportion of the impoverished population in China was higher than the global average, even when measured by a lower standard than that which is used globally. Poverty in the rural West during the 1980s can generally be described as large-scale, high incidence, and deep. During the last three decades since the reform and opening, the government has adopted a series of policies and measures to improve the lives of the poor and fight poverty in rural China. Those policies include building infrastructure, promoting economic development in impoverished areas, increasing investment in education and alleviating poverty by industrialization. In the progress of Western poverty alleviation the number of poor people has continued to decline, poverty incidence has fallen largely, poverty incidence has fallen largely and the disparity between regions has become smaller.
