Title: Maintaining Efficiency through Proper Planning
Abstract: This lengthy article describes how the Fort Worth Transportation Authority, known as The T., is handling the rapid population growth of Fort Worth, particularly on the city’s fringes. Fort Worth has grown from a population of 541,926 in 2000 to 703,000, and much of that growth has occurred on the low-density edges of the city, which extends for 350 square miles. Until recent years, The T had provided bus service for dependent riders, plus an extensive vanpool system for those riders on the outer-most fringes. Today the T operates 40 bus routes, mobility impaired services, carpools, vanpools, and is developing a new commuter railroad. It is also part-owner of the Trinity Railway Express. To stay on top of this city’s growing transportation needs, the T relies on a group of volunteer operators and customer service representatives who monitor routes; collect ridership data from fare boxes to identify opportunities for frequency reduction; and utilize stop-level boarding counts to evaluate portions of routes.
