Title: RISK FIGURES ACCORDING TO VEHICLE CATEGORY. THE INVOLVEMENT OF HEAVY TRAFFIC IN ACCIDENTS ON A NUMBER OF ROAD TYPES
Abstract: This report examines the accident involvement for a number of transport types, namely: passenger cars, delivery vans, lorries without a trailer, lorries with a trailer, and articulated lorries. Involvement in accidents was measured on motorways, secondary and tertiary roads outside built-up areas, and major roads inside built-up areas. Use was made of figures from the `Key Risk Indexes Research'. While data for the various road types was taken from several different data files, it was attempted to make the data as comparable as possible. The measure of risk selected was the number of victims per vehicle kilometre. When itemising according to vehicle type, the numerator included all victims of any accidents in which at least one vehicle from that particular category was involved (including any victim from other types of vehicles involved in these accidents). The denominator consisted of the vehicle kilometres for that particular type of vehicle. Tables are also given for the number of victims per accident. The data presented here were compiled as a part of the `Safe Transport over the Road Project' (VeVoWeg). The report is a monograph within this project. (A)
