Abstract: California has a comprehensive weigh-in-motion (WIM) system but has recently announced plans for expansion. The goal for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is to prevent damage to roads by tracking vehicle weights rather than prosecuting offenders. All commercial vehicles are required by California law to stop for weight checks. WIM systems increase the speed of checks, minimizing delay for compliant vehicles. WIM equipment used by Caltrans can work on vehicles traveling at speeds from five to one hundred miles per hour. Vehicles that are flagged as possibly overloaded are diverted to a static weighbridge. This system prevents overloaded vehicles from damaging California’s highways.
