Abstract: THE AUTHORS DESCRIBE THE EVOLUTION IN ROAD MAINTENANCE IN FRANCE SINCE THE WAR, STRESSING THE DATES WHICH LED TO INTENSIVE MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES SUCH AS THE 1962-63 WINTER THAT CAUSED CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE TO THE ROAD NETWORK AND WAS THE ORIGIN OF COORDINATED STRENGTHENING OPERATIONS. A TABLE SHOWS MAINTENANCE COSTS FOR MAIN ROADS FROM 1925 TO 1971. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE PRESENT POLICY: PRESERVATION OF STRENGTHENED PAVEMENTS, MAINTENANCE OF FREE TRAFFIC FLOW DURING ORDINARY WINTERS, IMPROVEMENT IN COMFORT AND SAFETY.
