Abstract: This special feature on road congestion examines a new report detailing how much it has spread and a second study giving five key strategies to combat it. Congestion has grown in areas of every size. Roads are carrying 91% more passenger-miles and transit ridership is up, too. Over the past 20 years, medium-sized urban areas have gone from 85% uncongested to 11% uncongested, according to a study by the Texas Transportation Institute. Suggestions include increasing capacity of roads and transit, increasing efficiency of operations, managing demand and development patterns and setting realistic expectations. The article provides charts and statistics on types of delays and effectiveness of different solutions.
