Title: A RE-APPRAISAL OF MERCHANTS CONTRIBUTION TO THE THEORY OF CONSOLIDATION
Abstract: The theory of consolidation which was first proposed in a thesis by Merchant in 1939 has been re-examined and the corresponding rheological model of the soil skeleton established. As this is a Hookean spring in series with a Kelivn body it is apparant that some more recent theories are either mathematically equivalent to Merchant's theory or are special cases of it. Some errors in the previously published versions of the theory have been corrected and numerical solutions based on various values of the soil parameters are included. /Author/
