Abstract: Road pavement surfaces in Australia and New Zealand have long been plagued by problems associated with ageing and cracking of a road surface seal allowing damaging entry of water to the pavement structure. There are many situations where the long term performance of a road surface is determined by factors beyond those of traffic loading and frequency. In today's economic climate with the reduction of maintenance budgets available to road authorities and public pressure to maintain high quality roads, as a consequence, on some low volume roads it has been impossible to continue with existing sealed surfaces. Road construction authorities have therefore had to seek new and innovative products to extend the life of existing seals. Paving fabrics have been developed after extensive testing and practical applications in varying conditions around the world. They have been proved to extend the pavement life two to three times thereby cutting maintenance costs (A).
