The propositional content of the author's unconscious intentional state functions causally in producing his behavior, and the same propositional content can be either conscious or unconscious. The unconscious, when unconscious, consists of a set of brain capacities which are in principle capable of turning the unconscious intentional state into a conscious form. But that makes it look as if unconscious intentional states, when unconscious, have the ontology of Background abilities.
