Abstract: A new generation of concrete pavements is in the works, thanks to the Concrete Pavement Technology Program, a 5-year, $25-million research effort launched in 1999. The program is being jointly administered by the Federal Highway Administration and the Innovative Pavement Research Foundation, a concrete paving industry consortium. The program's partners also include state highway agencies and the Transportation Research Board. Seven research projects were started under the program in 1999: traffic management studies for reconstructing high-volume roadways, performance and design of whitetopping overlays for heavily trafficked pavements, use of precast concrete panels for pavements, accelerated loading tests of ultrathin whitetopping, costs and benefits of various components of concrete pavements, high-performance concrete pavement test and evaluation projects, and HIPERPAV II software. New projects added by the concrete program in 2000 include the influence of sealing transverse contraction joints on the overall performance of concrete pavement, a workshop on concrete pavement technology for state Department of Transportation pavement engineers, and developing a plan to investigate the impacts of pavement cracking on long-term performance.
