Title: External Parking Assistance for Considering Elderly Driver
Abstract: This paper proposes an external parking assistance system designed for elderly drivers. The external system alleviates concerns of cost for on-board systems, and considers the special characteristics of elderly drivers. The authors report on the experiments conducted to test this parking assistance system, which is based in the infrastructure of parking lots rather then internal to the vehicle. The functions of the assistance system proposed here include the sensing of objects in the vicinity of the guided vehicle, communication between the guidance system and guided vehicle, and a guidance control algorithm. In the experiments, the driver manually drove the guided vehicle by following only the instructions from the guidance system. The HMI was evaluated by a subjective appraisal by questionnaire and an objective evaluation using the vehicle’s trajectory and error of parking. The authors conclude that elderly drivers need a system with little delay, simple instruction and objective evaluation. However, there is a wide variety in the skills and needs of elderly drivers, so the system will need to be adaptable to these various kinds of driving.
