Title: FOR THE COMMON GOOD: THE 85TH ANNIVERSARY OF A HISTORIC PARTNERSHIP
Abstract: This article provides a historical overview of the founding and ongoing efforts of the American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHO). The goals of the state highway officials who met at the inception of the AASHO, in December 1914, were to establish a national organization that would allow for the discussion of legislative, economic, and technical subjects, and to draft a legislative proposal for federal cooperation in road construction. The many accomplishments of the AASHO, including helping to create the historic partnership that would be known as the federal-aid highway program in the U.S., are described.
