Abstract: This article focuses on the advantages of transit oriented development. It profiles the FasTracks project in Denver, Colorado, and how parking can play a significant in the success of the system if it is integrated into the design of the light rail transit facilities. The article discusses the dimensions of the FasTracks system and how it will enhance the Regional Transportation District’s (RTD) network through the addition of 119 miles of light rail , 56 additional transit stations, and 18 new miles of bus rapid transit (BRT). It looks at some FasTracks parking issues, such as unexpected high ridership on the RTD’s first light rail line, increases in real estate value near transit stations, residential and office development at LRT stations, competition for parking spaces, and land availability. In addition, the article offers a summary of parking design principles that should be considered in order to optimize results. These include creating a station area development plan, shared parking and parking reduction strategies, strategic parking location, and the timing of transit-oriented development.
