Title: Progress in the Development of Salt Tolerant Alfalfa for Arizona
Abstract: Significant progress has been made in two cycles of selection with regard to the germination of alfalfa seed at higher levels of salt. The original `MesaSirsa' population had a germination percentage of 1.1, 0.6, 0.6, and 0.1% at -12, -12.5, -13 and -13.5 bars of sodium chloride. After seed was harvested from plants that were identified as salt tolerant in the second cycle of selection this new slat tolerant germplasm had germination percentages of 70.0, 51.0, 51.4 and 33.6% at -12, -12.5, -13, and -13.5 bars, respectively. We are currently applying selection pressure to identify even more salt tolerant plants within the Cycle2 Syn1 germplasm and have found that about 2% of the seed will germinate at -16 bars NaCl at 27C.
