Abstract: OUTLINE OF QUATERNARY STRATIGRAPHY IN POLAND; MAIN GLACIAL AND INTERGLACIAL HORIZONS, AND THEIR EXTENTS
Summary
Outline of the Quaternary in Poland is represented by two synthetic geological sections across the northern foreland of the Carpathians (Figs. 1-3), the Mid-Polish Uplands and the Polish Lowland. Age correlation of sediments was done on the basis of sites with interglacial sediments that possess palaeontological evidence. This presentation supports the opinion on subdivision of the Quaternary in Poland into three main parts i.e. the Prepleistocene, the Pleistocene and the Holocene. In turn, the Pleistocene is composed of the eight main glaciations: Narewian, Nidanian, Sanian 1, Sanian 2, Liwiecian, Odranian, Wartanian and Vistulian, and the separating seven interglacials: Podlasian, Malopolanian, Ferdynandowian, Mazovian, Zbojnian, Lubawian and Eemian (Fig. 4). The two presented geological sections have their terminations in Germany (site Gosda), Russia (site Domnowo) and Belarus (site Gwozdnica), and constitute the first attempt of correlation in this way of the Pleistocene glacial and interglacial units in Central Europe. A more precise climatostratigraphical setting of the main stratigraphical units of the Quaternary in the Central European Lowland seems therefore possible.
