Title: Value outcomes for road asset management from AAPA 2004 study tour to USA
Abstract: In June 2004, AAPA conducted the most recent in its series of overseas technical study tours, which date back to the late 19805. The paper summarises the key findings from the Tour in relation to possible benefits in adding value to the design, construction and maintenance process of roads in Australia. Many of the topics investigated have particular significance to the local road network and these are reported in the paper. The paper also provides an outline of how local government interacts with State Road authorities and industry in the USA to maintain and develop technical expertise in road pavement asset management. Finally, the paper describes how the study tour learnings and subsequent workshops and discussions in Australia have provided valuable input to the review and future refinement of specifications and guides for management of the Australian road network.
