Title: LONG DISTANCE ROAD AND RAIL FREIGHT IN AUSTRIA
Abstract: The research aimed at establishing a model for the study of the evolution of long distance freight traffic in Austria, on the basis of traffic economy. A study was made of long distance freight traffic from, to and passing through Austria. The study was based on data from the central office for statistics in Austria and the Austrian railway authority. The mathematical model developed included the Austrian road network (motorways, link roads), border crossings, the railway system of the federal Austrian railway and all principal stations and border railway stations. This forms the basis for a traffic economic criterion which makes use of the actual net transport costs for road freight transport from the point of view of the forwarding agent and for rail freight transport in the case of the railway authority. This contains details of all relevant monetary expenditure and transport time and results in a calculation of the long distance freight load on all roads and railway sections in Austria.
