Abstract: Constance Reid was not trained as a mathematician, but she is well known for her books on mathematics and mathematicians. These include From Zero to Infinity and A Long Way From Euclid (published by Thomas Y. Crowell ) and Hilbert and Courant in Gottingen and New York (published by Springer-Verlag). She is, however, a member of a mathematical family. Her brother-in-law, R. M. Robinson, is professor emeritus of mathematics at Berkeley; and her sister, Julia Robinson, also a professor of mathematics at Berkeley, is the only woman mathematician to have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Mrs. Reid majored in English at San Diego State University, received a master's degree at the University of California at Berkeley, and taught in the San Diego schools until her marriage in 1950. Since the publication of her book on David Hilbert, she has been invited to speak at a number of mathematical meetings. Her most recent appearance was at the MAA's summer meeting in Duluth, where her subject was Answer to the Question That Everyone Asks Me. The following conversation took place at Mrs. Reid's home in San Francisco in July 1979.
