Title: COMPETITION IN THE PROVISION OF US AND UK URBAN BUS SERVICES: PRIVATISATION VS DEREGULATION. FROM THE BOOK BUS DEREGULATION AND PRIVATISATION
Abstract: In the UK, government has promoted competition in the provision of local bus services through deregulation, i.e. by providing for free entry into the local-bus carrier industry, with government subsidy grants being dispersed on a competitive tendering basis. Under deregulation, market forces are relied upon rather than the public transit firm (as in the US) to determine the extent of competition in the provision of local bus services. The UK is a superior approach to the privatization approach of the US for promoting competition.
