Abstract: This article describes how Slovenia is handling dense traffic on its new roadways as well as ensuring that its many new tunnels are safe, and feel safe, for motorists, many of whom are tourists. Mindful of the number of tragic accidents in European tunnels in recent years, the Slovenians paid special attention to safety when building a number of new tunnels as part of the roadway network. They installed electronic systems that immediately detect fire and its precise location. Traffic accidents are also detected immediately so that automatic interventions can be taken in the shortest possible time. Since many drivers are nervous in tunnels, the Slovenians have provided attractive and easy to read text and pictograms to provide information, as well as excellent lighting within the tunnel. The article further describes various tunnel systems in use in Slovenia, the role of the control and management center, precautions in the event of fire, user systems inside the tunnels, and a discussion of lighting fixtures.
