Title: Translating Scientific Progress in Dyslexia into Twenty-first Century Diagnosis and Interventions
Abstract: Dyslexia (or specific reading disability) is the most common and extensively studied of the learning disabilities, affecting 80% of all individuals identified as learning disabled. Not only is dyslexia the most thoroughly characterized of all learning disabilities but it is historically the oldest. In fact, the first description of dyslexia in children preceded the first mention of "learning disability" by over 60 years; dyslexia was first described in 1896 while the term "learning disability" was not used until 1962! As discussed throughout this chapter, the demonstration of an unexpected difficulty in reading in relation to intelligence is a key hallmark of dyslexia. Dyslexia is an unexpected difficulty in reading that is best and most reliably and clearly demonstrated by performance on a test of intelligence, on the WISC-V, most often observed using the VCI, though the Full Scale IQ may also be useful.
