Some companies had stable projects to take them t...This article examines the ways in which highways contractors in the Asia-Pacific region have managed their business through the Asian economic crisis. Some companies had stable projects to take them through the worst of the crisis, while other contractors survived by adapting their resources to meet the needs of less affected industries. It was difficult to get construction loans from banks, which meant that many contractors now rely on government funded work for their stability. The countries considered are Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Korea and the Philippines, with lesser attention given to Sri Lanka and Japan. A problem highlighted is that some companies have sold equipment to raise cash, but this leaves them in an uncompetitive position when the economic situation improves.Read More
