Title: Status of Alternative Fuels in Public Transportation Applications
Abstract: This paper describes how considerable attention and development is presently being directed toward alternative fuels as a means of addressing a variety of environmental and security concerns. It is widely acknowledged that renewable fuels demonstrate more favorable security, sustainability, and environmental characteristics, and long-term price trends are projected to be downward while those of non-renewables are stable to increasing. Biofuels (such as biodiesel) demonstrate reduced criteria and greenhouse gas emissions and are increasing in popularity because they can be integrated into existing bus fleets at the lowest capital cost. Hybrid-electric propulsion systems are experiencing increased commercialization as a result of their improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.
