Title: A CONCEPT DESIGN SYSTEM FOR SHIPS WHICH INCORPORATES PRODUCTION CONSIDERATIONS
Abstract: The importance of reducing risk through improved design and estimating procedures at the concept design stage is discussed. A research and development programme is described in which staff from industry and a university have collaborated to produce and effective, practical design tool based on sound fundamental principles. The attributes of modern C.A.D. workstations are utilised to provide a highly interactive, user friendly design system. The inclusion of production considerations into the design process at the earliest possible stage is shown to be feasible. The system relies on accurate information on hull shape, ship layout, structural arrangement and manufacturing processes being available. Measures are described which ensure reliable results are obtained.
