Title: BROWN SKY BLUES-ARE TRANSPORTATION RX'S A CURE?
Abstract: This paper describes how transportation makes a major contribution towards air pollution. Leaving aside the significant emissions associated with off-road vehicles (e.g., airplanes, trains and ships), on-road vehicles account for 44 percent of hydrocarbons, 60 percent of nitrogen oxides, 88 percent of carbon monoxides, 26 percent of sulfur oxides, and 5 percent of PM10 particulates (plus much more particulate emissions associated with road construction and paved road dust). These numbers all based on the Los Angeles Basin and most of the discussion in this paper uses Southern California data. However most of the analyses drawn in the paper can be generalized nationwide. It follows that attaining Federal clean air standards requires reductions in on-road vehicle emissions.
