Title: A SPENDING SCHEME FULL OF POTHOLES --(ONE ARTICLE IN A SERIES ON ROAD MAINTENANCE IN GREAT BRITAIN)
Abstract: The consequences of the decision by the Department of Transport to stop all new work and review its expenditure programme are discussed. The outcome is thought to be a cut in road maintenance programmes, which is in direct opposition to previous intentions by the department, to end the backlog of repair work by 1992. Without a change in policy this objective will not be achieved for either motorways or local roads. Figures for real and, where relevant, forecast expenditure on local road maintenance in England from 1980 to 1991 are provided, as is the progress of renewal on trunk roads and motorways (miles reviewed) for 1982-91. For the covering abstract of the series of articles of which this is one, see IRRD 814168.
