Title: Géologie de Mayaguana, SE de l'archipel des Bahamas
Abstract: Seven formations of Miocene to Holocene age were identified on Mayaguana (SE Bahamas), four of which are new. The four oldest stratigraphic units occur along the north coast and form a succession <12 m thick spanning 17 Ma (accumulation rate of 0.6 m/Ma). The exposed Plio-Pleistocene boundary is at +3 m there, but at depths around 10 m elsewhere. The youngest units are evenly distributed throughout the island. Eight relative sea levels all <10 m apsl were determined which is surprising considering the difference in Neogene and Quaternary sea-level stands. The sediment accumulation rate for the Neogene is much lower than for others carbonate platforms of similar age (11 to 26 m/Ma) which is due to the slow subsidence and the elevation of the Mayaguana platform. Its subsidence history and its limited aggradation suggest that Mayaguana is stable since the Miocene, implying that Neogene sea levels never exceeded 10 m.
