Title: Study on road traffic accidents in Palakkad town and suggestion of remedial measures
Abstract: Problems of parking, accidents, delay, congestion and environmental degradation are the result of the alarming rate of increase in vehicular traffic on Indian roads. Nearly 30-40% of the total deaths due to accidents of all types are a result of road accidents. It is becoming increasingly necessary to analyze road accidents scientifically, with the increasing complexity of roads and road transport problems, so as to develop countermeasures for reducing accident rates, as well as identify accident prone locations. The details of an accident study are contained in this paper, including collection and analysis of accident data for the past three years and remedial measures suggested to reduce the accident rate on one State Highway stretch and two National Highway stretches passing through Palakkad town in Kerala. Also presented are the main features of accident occurrences, as well as general and site specific recommendations for implementation.
