Abstract: This article describes a four-year project to upgrade maintenance shops for Metro-North Railroad, the second-largest commuter railroad in the U.S. and a subsidiary of New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority, with more than 73 million trips a year. Rebuilding the Harmon shop complex is a top priority, since it serves the majority of the fleet. The first challenge was to design the renovation to permit ongoing use of the facility, which operates round the clock, while new parts were being built. Land use conflicts with nearby residential parcels were also a factor, with neighbors complaining about idling diesel engines. The article describes elements of the Phase 1 renovation, which was recently completed for $64 million. It also describes the next three phases, which will culminate with a new electric car shop.
