Title: INTEGRATED URBAN TRANSPORTATION -- A MAJOR CHALLENGE FOR TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERS
Abstract: Pedestrians, private automobile, public transportation and other modes are components of a total urban transportation system. However, for historical reasons and because of major differences in their physical, operational and cost characteristics, different modes are being planned and operated by different organizations or public agencies. Transportation, including all modes, should be treated as a single activity which must be closely coordinated with urban form and land use. Coordination of different modes should be based on the fact that the basic unit in transportation is not a vehicle, but a person.
