Abstract: Malawi has a diverse informal financial sector that consists of individual lenders, mutual associations, non-financial business firms, and government and non-governmental organisations that lend as employers to their employees. In terms of the volume of credit, the size of the informal financial sector is about as large as that of the formal financial sector. The informal financial sector plays a significant role mainly in extending credit, but also in the mobilisation of savings. Despite its success, the informal financial sec tor suffers from lack of adequate loanable funds. Besides, few informal financial institu tions provide term finance or generate resources for the future security of participants. Integration with the formal financial sector might mitigate these problems. LE SECTEUR FINANCIER NON OFFICIEL AU MALAWI
