Title: Inventario faunístico y corología de los escarabeidos coprófagos (Coleoptera) de la Sierra de Baza (Granada, Sureste de la Peninsula Ibérica)
Abstract: We provide the species checklist of coprophagous Scarabaeoidea from Sierra de Baza (Granada, S.E. Spain). We sampled dung beetles on a bi-monthly basis for two complete year-long cycles (March 1994 to February 1996). Sampling was carried out using traps baited with cattle or horse dung and unbaited pitfall traps, and by collecting beetles in natural dung pats. 33 species of Scarabaeoidea belonging to the families Scarabaeidae, Aphodiidae, Geotrupidae and Trogidae were collected, the two former families including most of both species and individuals. Although the same number of species of Scarabaeidae and Aphodiidae were found, Scarabaeidae were relatively more abundant. The most abundant species (Euonthophagus gibbosus, Onthophagus lemur, Aphodius distinctus and Aphodius foetidus) were associated mainly with high-mountain zones and xeric biotopes the southern slopes. Most of the species of the assemblage have a Mediterranean distribution, although Iberian endemics and, in the case of Scarabeidae, species with euroturanic distribution patterns also formed an important proportion of the assemblage.
