Abstract: Neural stem cells (NSCs) generate new neurons throughout life in two distinct areas of the mammalian brain, the subventricular zone (SVZ) lining the lateral ventricles and the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG). Here the recent advances in understanding cell-intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms regulating the activity of NSCs and neuronal integration are discussed. In addition, the impact of adult neurogenesis on physiological brain function and its association with neuropsychiatric disease states is discussed.
