Title: THE SOLVENT EXTRACTION OF URANIUM AND PLUTONIUM FROM NITRIC/SULPHURIC ACID SOLUTIONS
Abstract: The separation of uranium and plutonium from irradiated nuclear fuel by solvent extraction requires comprehensive and accurate distribution data. An AKUFVE apparatus has been adapted for use in a glove box with plutonium solutions in order to obtain such data, and its operation extensively automated. Comprehensive data have been collected for the extraction of uranium, plutonium and nitric acid into tributyl phosphate/odourless kerosene at a range of nitric and sulphuric acid concentrations, and incorporated into the QUANTEX computer program. Good agreement was found between calculated and experimental concentration profiles for a uranium/plutonium separation process using nitric and sulphuric acids.
