Title: Oxidation of zirconium carbide by nickel oxide
Abstract: The carbide composition determines the oxidation trends for zirconium carbide acted on by oxygen from nickel oxide. In the case of ZrCo/sub 0.97/, carbon mainly reacts, which gives CO, and then the zirconium begins to oxidized as the carbon is depleted, with the formation of cubic ZrO/sub 2/, with the carbon deposited in free form. In the case of ZrC/sub 0.77/, only the stage of preferential zirconium oxidation occurs. It is found that zirconium oxycarbides are not formed as primary products under these conditions
