Abstract: Railways throughout the world are rushing to join the high-speed railway club. Rail is showing that it can offer strong competition to the airlines, particularly for journeys of less than 400km. A major development is the creation of international high-speed networks. Some of the countries involved are: Germany, Sweden, Great Britain, Brussels, France, and Japan; with a growing interest in Russia, China, the Republic of Korea, and the United States. This article reviews some of these high-speed networks.
