Title: CLEANING UP VEHICLE FLEETS: MINIMISING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Abstract: The author takes a brief look at what fleet operators can do to minimise the adverse environmental impact of their fleets, apart from using fuels other than petrol and diesel. An environmental audit of transport operation will highlight areas requiring priority action. A checklist is given for fleet operators covering the transport manager's office, the depot and the vehicle and the vehicle cab. Political and economic factors that need to be taken into account are also discussed. Problems exist on the means of capturing, or charging for, the 'non-user' benefits from environmental gains. The main recommendations are given from three recent studies on transport and the environment. For the covering abstract, see IRRD 882649.
