Title: OBSERVATION OF DRIVING BEHAVIOUR BY MEANS OF THE CONFLICT TECHNIQUE
Abstract: The conflict technique is a method of forecasting the number of accidents on hazardous lengths of road. Furthermore it is possible with this method to examine effectiveness after a few days of tangible measures for improving safety. Because the frequency of conflicts (the sum of all situations which could lead to accidents) is related directly to accident frequency, it can be used as a tool for the forecasting of accidents. The advantage lies in the fact that within a relatively short time - even if no accident data are available - assertions can be made as to the effectiveness of different road safety measures. A further area of application exists in situation diagnosis, where an attempt is made to obtain information supplementary to accident analysis about the degree of risk and problems of traffic flow at specific places.
