Title: Rutting Resistance Performance Evaluation of Superpave Mixes with Antirutting Additives
Abstract: This paper addresses the rutting resistance performance of asphalt mixture using different anti-rutting additives. Four different types of additives, SBS (Styrene Butadiene Styrene, China), PR (PR PLAST.S, France), Domix (Germany) and RS (Rad Spunrie, China), were selected for the study . Based on Superpave mixture design method, asphalt mixtures were evaluated by the modified wheel tracking test and Simple Performance Test (SPT). Five different criteria, including relative deformation rate, flow number, flow time, E* and E*/sin¦µ were analyzed for their effectiveness to evaluate the rutting resistance of asphalt mixtures with different additives. In the modified wheel tracking test, relative deformation rate after 10,000 passes of loading was selected as the controlling index. The results show that, concerning the rutting resistance, the HMA with PR as its additive turns out to be the best, followed by that with RS, SBS, Domix in sequence. While in SPT, the indices of flow number and flow time are almost equally qualified to distinguish the rutting resistance of HMA using the four different kinds of additives. However, the results are different from that based on the index of relative deformation rate. Flow number and flow time of HMA with SBS as its additive are the largest, which indicates its rutting resistance performance is the best. With regard to dynamic modulus E* and E*/sin¦µ, the comparision results are similar to that of relative deformation rate.
