Abstract: This article concerns efforts being made in Sweden to identify and solve problems of train punctuality. A long-term project, PULS, concentrated on defining all the difficulties experienced by certain trains identified by their operators as requiring special attention. Action plans are introduced and a log kept of measures proposed and their success in improving punctuality. It is hoped that the system would be able to follow up the punctuality of a train through Europe. PULS is expected to become more pro-active: development requirements include a need for a customer service function, involving improved communications in traffic control and with railway operators. Other proposals are for quality levels for trains, possible sanctions on railway companies, better communications between traffic controllers, and weather information for effective winter track maintenance.
