Title: AN APPROACH TO SHIP STRUCTURAL DESIGN BY COMPUTER IN LLOYD'S REGISTER
Abstract: Lloyd's Register of Shipping is involved in the design of reliable and economic ship structures suited to the particular environment in which they will spend their useful life. This is achieved by the use of mathematical models to simulate the ocean wave environment in which the ship operates, and the ship response to this environment. The practical application of such mathematical techniques is only made possible by the effective use of high-speed digital computers of large capacity and their associated peripheral equipment. This paper outlines the engineering philosophy behind the integrated structural design system, and describes both the engineering and computer systems, which together provide the vehicle for its implementation.
