Abstract: A collection of works by Stone Roberts, a young figurative artist. The 52 illustrations, 43 of which are in colour, reproduce all of Roberts' paintings. A selection of the artist's drawings is also included, among which are a number of studies for paintings. All of the works featured were completed during the last decade. Although Roberts' work resembles the best of the Old Masters more than it does any of the current avant-garde styles, it is unmistakably contemporary. His subjects are either still lifes or figure compositions that hint at - but do not entirely reveal - a wealth of narrative complexity and subtlety. An essay by Charles Michener, a writer on culture, provides an understanding of Roberts' sensibility and a critical analysis of the individual works.
