Abstract: This review of the air Cargo involvement of British airports, notes that despite strong competition from surface transportation air freighting has grown steadily and is now making inroads in the carriage of lower value commodities. Further analysis reveals that short-haul cargo operations have found it harder than longhaul to overcome the competition at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. The impact of air cargo are discussed: increasing use and capacity of mixed passenger cargo aircraft, and the nocturnal nature of air cargo operations. The latter problem is linked with the need for operating noise-certificated aircraft for air cargo. The increasing tendency for air cargo to be concentrated at the major hub airports has additional environmental and road traffic repercussions. Comments are also made on predicting patterns of growth of air cargo traffic.
