Title: DRIVERLESS HEAVY METROS: WHEN TRANSIT SYSTEMS MEET RAILWAY SYSTEMS
Abstract: This paper describes how, in a white paper published in 1996, Singapore launched a policy to develop a world-class transit system. The government authorized its transportation board, Land Transport Authority (LTA), to deliver one new rapid transit project per year. Among the projects that have progressed since then included several Light Rail Transit systems of which the most ambitious are the driverless North East Line (NEL) and the Circle Line (CL) metros. The NEL and CL projects represent a new trend in mass transit evolution, going from light manually driven trains to heavy driverless metro trains (NEL trains are 138 meters long and 3.21 meters wide). These projects used steel wheel on steel rail technology with conventional rotary motors. The objective of this paper is to describe the key features of both of these projects.
