Abstract: A methodology for simulation of operational ship seakeeping performance has been developed, and its conceptual form is described. The methodology provides a quantitative description of the ship's dynamic responses to the encountered environment (seaway) and is suitable for implementation in various degrees of sophistication dependent upon the needs and available resources of the user. Several simulation techniques are discussed and advantages and disadvantages of each are clearly identified. Samples of simulated ship seakeeping characteristics, appropriate for heavy weather damage avoidance, are given for a typical displacement surface ship. Details of the simulation procedure are provided with the emphasis placed on the dynamics of the ship and the surface of the ocean.
