Abstract: Rail fasteners function not only to attach rails to crossties or slabs so that they cannot move under external forces such as those exerted by continuous welded rail, but also so they withstand the vibrations and impacts resulting from the passage of trains. The evolution of methods for fastening rails from track spikes to those used on the Tokaido line are described.
