Title: NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION POLICY ADMINISTRATION (TRANSITIONAL LESSONS FROM HOME AND ABROAD)
Abstract: The lessons to be learned by the U.S. from the transportation experience of Western Europe are examined. The U.S. experience is examined in the light of external perspective. The role of national policy and planning and the particular problems produced by private enterprise in the transport sector are discussed. The nationalized railroads are compared with the private U.S. railway industry. Conclusions are drawn about the importance of transport, nationalization, changes in regulatory climate, government investments, subsidies, research and development, and planning and management systems.
