Title: HONG KONG - PUBLIC TRANSPORT AND THE MASS TRANSIT RAILWAY
Abstract: The author briefly reviews Hong Kong transport studies carried out since the mid 1960's and examines the different public transport modes available in the city and their level of service: buses, trams, ferries, railway, minibuses, private and school buses, hire cars, pak pais or unlicensed hire cars, taxis, motorcycles and commercial vehicles. Statistics are presented on the roles of the different modes prior to the arrival of the mass transit railway. The planning, development, opening, operation and economic aspects of the mass transit railway are discussed.
